Mercedes has confirmed that the alleged G-Class small car will be fully electric, as part of the company's gradual shift towards zero-emission cars.

In an important development in the automotive industry, Mercedes-Benz revealed a bold step towards an all-electric future during the 2024 Consumer Electronics Show.

Markus Schäfer, the company's technical chief, announced the upcoming version of the small Mercedes G-Class, which will operate exclusively with an electric propulsion system, putting an end to speculation about the possibility of a version powered by an internal combustion engine.

This electric SUV is distinguished by its unconventional choice of the platform on which it will be built. Contrary to expectations, the small G-Class will not be built on Mercedes' modern modular platform (MMA), designed specifically for electric cars. Rather, it will be built on its own platform that contains components from the German company's larger cars.

What's interesting about this small off-roader is that it has advanced technologies similar to those that will be featured in the EQG, the full-size electric G-Class, a project led by Magna Steyr.

Mercedes has confirmed that the electric EQG, the big sister of the small G-Class, will outperform its counterpart equipped with an internal combustion engine in terms of off-road capabilities. This statement hints at the great potential also expected for the small version of the G-Class.

The new G Class division at Mercedes was commissioned to create the small electric version of the G Wagon, as this car will be the third model in the G Class series, alongside the internal combustion engine G Class and the electric EQG model.

The small electric G Class is scheduled to debut in 2026, while the full-size EQG is expected to be unveiled later this year.

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Källenius confirmed in September last year that the German company was working on a smaller version of the G-Class, and it was described at the time as Little G in reference to its smaller size than the traditional model.

It is expected that the smaller version of the off-road vehicle from Mercedes will be cheaper, with the German company targeting a new category of customers.
